As we noted in the first mini-post of the series top 5 known platforms are:

  1. Magento – 27 websites
  2. IBM Websphere Commerce – 9 websites
  3. Demandware – 6 websites
  4. Hybris – 6 websites
  5. Amblique – 3 websites

Other 9 platforms power less than 3 websites each, 11 websites all together.

As you may notice Magento eCommerce is clear leader, it is used by 27 out of 100 websites, the runner-up platform – IBM Websphere is powering 9 online stores, 3 times less than Magento. 3-4 places are shared by Hybris and Demandware, each powering 3 websites. Magento leadership is consistent with other data, such as this research from Internet Retailer.

Google PageSpeed scores of top eCommerce platforms

Let’s inspect Google PageSpeed scores of top platforms. We had to exclude Amblique from this comparison, because Google Pagespeed Insights tool was unable to calculate the scores for the websites powered by this eCommerce platform. It isn’t clear how it affects search engine ranking of the websites, but probably not so good. Anyway interactive version of Google Pagespeed Mobile Score for other top ecommerce platforms is below.

Google PageSpeed Mobile Score

Google PageSpeed Desktop Score

Google Mobile UX score

If for some reason it doesn’t work for you, here is link to this chart as an image.

With all Google scores, excluding Google UX (user experience) score where it is the 2nd best Magento shows the worst and the best (or equal) results, the biggest deviation and lags in averages other platforms. Probably it is the price of popularity, couple not very good realisations affects average; there is one website on Magento with extremely low Google PageSpeed mobile and desktop scores.

The best average Google metrics from top 4 platform is scored by Hybris, it is ahead of other platforms in all 3 metrics.

Pingdom performance score of top eCommerce platforms

If for some reason it doesn’t work for you, here is link to this chart as an image.

With Pingdom performance grade all top platform excluding IBM Websphere, which is lagging significantly, has very close score close to 74 out of 100.

Page load speed of top eCommerce platforms

If for some reason it doesn’t work for you, here is link to this chart as an image.

With load speed based on our sample Demandware and Ambilique shows the best results. Magento similar with Google score shows very high standard deviation and the worst average.

Page size of top eCommerce platforms

If for some reason it doesn’t work for you, here is link to this chart as an image.

As we noticed in the previous post in this series the correlation between page size and load speed isn’t very high and indeed, we have here different leader – Hybris, who has smaller page size in average than other platforms, including Demandware that leads in terms of average speed load.

Disclaimer

There are many factors affecting website performance so the metrics be different even if the same tests are conducted during the same day. The sample size is rather small for many platform, so even one well or poorly done website can affect the metrics significantly.

In spite of our best efforts there is a possibility that in some cases we couldn’t identify the platform correctly or the calculations we conducted are wrong. We would appreciate if you point us to such mistakes. Feel free to just comment this post or Contact Us
